Komprise Unveils Elastic Data Migration To Move Data Between On-Premises, Cloud

Elastic Data Migration's real power is in being included at no charge with Komprise's Intelligent Data Management offering, making it easy for solution providers to analyze the data before doing the migration, says Krishna Subramanian, president and COO of Komprise.

Data management technology developer Komprise Tuesday unveiled Elastic Data Migration, a new application aimed at quickly migrating data between on-premises and multiple cloud infrastructures.

While Elastic Data Migration can be purchased as a stand-alone technology, its real power is in being included at no charge with Komprise's Intelligent Data Management offering, making it easy for solution providers to analyze the data before doing the migration, said Krishna Subramanian, president and chief operating officer for the Campbell, Calif.-based vendor.

Elastic Data Migration was developed in response to businesses moving from migrating information in their data centers to migrating information across clouds and data centers using high-latency WANs, Subramanian told CRN.

"Komprise does data management software across storage, archives and migration," she said. "It has typically been used inside a single data center. But now people want to turn off some storage in the data center and move the data to the cloud, or from one cloud to a better cloud. To do that, they need low latency. Our technology moves data fast over the WAN because it does multiple things in parallel."

Elastic Data Migration exploits parallelism at the share and volume level, directory level and file level to help maximize performance, and adjusts as needed to the available resources.

It is tuned to customers' specific protocols to help cut the overhead of the migration, and makes sure data migrates with permissions, metadata, and ACLs (access control lists) intact across different storage environments.

There are other good stand-alone applications for migrating data to and from data centers and the cloud, Subramanian said. However, they typically are either free of charge and slow, or cost hundreds of dollars per terabyte, she said.

"Data migration is time-consuming and error-prone," she said. "Customers can use specialty software, but it's expensive. With Komprise, we include Elastic Data Migration in our Komprise Intelligent Data Management offering at no charge. Or customers can purchase it with the related analytics for under $100 per terabyte."

Komprise is a channel-only company, and the addition of Elastic Data Migration to Komprise Intelligent Data Management represents a solid opportunity for channel partners, Subramanian said.

"This lets channel partners go to their customers and say, 'You are trying to migrate to the cloud? Let me help you. And when you're done, don't turn it off. Let us keep managing your data,'" she said.

Compared with traditional data migration offerings, Komprise's solution is much more data-driven, said Jason Grant, director of storage and data solutions at VeriStor Systems, an Atlanta-based solution provider and Komprise channel partner.

"Komprise collects file-level analytics based on the source data, and makes intelligent decisions based on the age of the data, who owns the data, and so on," Grant told CRN. "It has the flexibility based on where you want the data to go. So if you are doing a storage refresh, you can get an immediate ROI before making a purchase."

Understanding the cost of is important, Grant said.

"The real cost depends on how much data is moved, and more important how often that data is accessed or pulled back," he said. "For storage refresh projects, Komprise can help with cost modeling so you're not guessing about what to invest in storing it. And you can see the ROI even before issuing a purchase order."

For migrating data between clouds in a cloud-first strategy, Elastic Data Migration with Komprise Intelligent Data Management helps model costs across all the different cloud platforms and against on-premises platforms, Grant said.

"This gives a real chance to drive costs down and to leverage cost containment and flexibility on the back end when migrating that data," he said.
