Acronis Launches DLP To Tackle Rising Security Threats

‘Ransomware is still the most devastating threat that we see at the moment,’ said Candid Wuest, vice president of cyber protection research at Acronis.

CRN: Hi, everybody. Welcome to Acronis #CyberFit Summit here in Miami. I’m Diana Blass with CRN. Human error continues to be a major cause of cyberattacks, and damages from ransomware are expected to reach $30 billion in 2023. Here to shed light on this research and the tools for preventing these attacks is Acronis’ Candid Wuest.

Candid Wuest, Vice President, Cyber Protection Research: Ransomware is still the most devastating threat that we see at the moment. And of course, it means that if you’re not protected, or you’re just saying, ‘I do have backups,’ that might not be enough because you need to know how fast can I restore my backups, right? If it takes four days, you have backups, but that might not be good for your company. And of course, a lot of ransomware now steals data, so it goes into data leakage, data breaches, which is why we also launched our data loss prevention product at this summit.

CRN: Acronis Advanced DLP is fully integrated into the Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud. It extends the platform’s cybersecurity capabilities by preventing data leakage as the data is shared among users and moves across systems. Typically, DLP is an expensive solution to deploy because it requires upfront work to define the sensitive information and then formulate detection rules. Acronis’ integrated approach has minimized this work for MSPs, many of whom have already seen the benefits of a consolidated platform.

Cramer Snuggs, [founder] of Cascade Technology says that his customers haven’t faced a breach in 365 days thanks to Acronis. Thanks for joining us.

Cramer Snuggs: Absolutely.

CRN: And pretty impressive.

Snuggs: Thank you. Thank you.

CRN: So what is it about Acronis’ solutions that really have prevented your customers from facing large-scale breaches?

Snuggs: I think it’s more so about the single pane of glass that we continue to talk about, where all of our solutions are communicating back and forth with one another. So our antivirus and our active protections communicating with our backup and our disaster recovery platform. So I think just the overall reach of the Acronis platform and how many different functionalities that we have has greatly reduced the risk that we’re seeing today.

CRN: To underscore the value of a platform approach to cybersecurity, Acronis discussed research at its #CyberFit Summit about the portfolio of those under attack.

Wuest: We did a survey and asked how many security solutions are companies using in parallel, and 22 percent of the respondents were using more than 10 security solutions in parallel. So you have multiple vendors, multiple invoices, probably training for the employees as well. So lots of things you need to do. And the attackers, they just need one of those errors and they’re in.

CRN: And they’re ready to profit.

Bryan Grayeck, Director, Information, Cybersecurity, REDW: Every company that we talked to about it that’s been hacked or been breached, they’re losing anywhere from $60,000 to $80,000 to $100,000 or more, $1 million. It’s not unusual for a hacker to require a million-dollar payment in Bitcoin before they’ll release the information.

CRN: Lastly, as we look at the huge amount of funds that Acronis now is getting from investors and the innovation with a number of patents, how is the technology going to continue to evolve? What trends is Acronis really going to be investing in?

Wuest: Oh, we have different threat patterns that we look at. And of course, also different avenues, Internet of Things, beyond cyber, there’s so many devices coming in the next few years that need to be protected. And on the other hand, of course, there’s still more to be done on being faster on the internet, making it that you can actually restore your company in just a few hours, not just a few days. So we’re looking at all those different things, and some of it might come next year, some of it might just be down five years, but we want to be able to protect the things that you want to protect in the next five years.
