Solution provider Comtech Telecommunications Corp. is scooping up Solacom Technologies Inc., a firm focused on public safety communications management, for $33 million, the two providers revealed on Tuesday.

Comtech Telecommunications, based in Melville, N.Y., has specialized in building telecom systems and services for more than 50 years. Combining with Quebec-based Solacom will expand Comtech’s presence in the public safety market thanks to Solacom's next-generation 911 (NG911) expertise.

"With safety and security markets at growth inflection points, the Solacom acquisition is a significant step in our strategy of enhancing our solutions offerings, particularly with respect to NG911 capabilities," Comtech's President and CEO Fred Kornberg said in a statement about the deal.

Comtech, a solution provider powerhouse, has more than 18,000 employees today and targets global commercial and government customers. Pierre Plangger, Solacom's current leader, will continue to serve as CEO and President of Solacom once the two companies are combined, he said in a statement.

"I expect our customers will benefit from significantly greater resources and more diverse product offerings, and our employees will benefit from being part of a larger, more diversified company," Plangger said.

The two companies emphasized that as they join forces, there are no planned changes in any scheduled or committed rollouts from either company, and that they plan on honoring all existing agreements with their respective customers, VARs, distributors, OEMs and other strategic partners.

Comtech did not immediately respond to a request for additional comment, and Solacom couldn't be contacted prior to publication.

Solacom's technology will let Comtech build on its relationships with existing customers by offering an immediate upgrade path to next-generation call handling solutions. At the same time, the combination will help the company build new relationships with state and local government customers, as well as certain international customers, Comtech said.

The two companies expect the deal, which is subject to customary closing conditions, to close during Comtech’s fiscal quarter ending April 30, 2019.
