WATCH: HP CTO Shane Wall Discusses An Automated, Intelligent Future

A new era is on the horizon, according to HP’s latest Megatrends report. CRNtv got the details at HP Reinvent 2019 with HP Chief Technology Officer Shane Wall.

Your report touches on AI and automation. What impact will these technologies have on the workforce? What people will be out of jobs?

Wall: They won’t be out of jobs. I’m very much an optimist on it and some of the work we did on economic segmentation really brought some of that out. A few key pieces if you look at that: We will have about a 16 percent shortage of high-skills workers by 2030. Now, that’s even with the automation that we’re driving today. So, yes, there will be a change in how jobs are done and there will be some jobs replaced by something different, but it’s not going to eliminate jobs completely. And that automation and driving that automation is going to become critical if we want to close that gap, that 16 percent gap, that exists.

You mentioned talent shortage and an area that comes to mind is security. At HP Reinvent, HP CEO Dion Weisler said there are more than twice as many connected devices on the planet than people. Tell us how AI and automation will impact security and what we can expect in that area.

Wall: You’re spot on. It’s exactly a challenge we will have. Twice as many devices as the population today. By 2025, there will be 25 billion connected devices and all of them will have the ability to communicate back up to the internet and all of them will pose a security threat. We think there are revolutionary technologies coming out. We just introduced Sure Sense technology and the technology is really going beyond our basic anti-virus and hardware protection. What it does is use artificial intelligence and machine learning to look at signals that we couldn’t have seen before and to pattern those signals into threats in order to protect the systems.

Wall also discussed how channel partners can profit with the rise of these new technologies. Watch CRNtv’s video included in this article to learn more.
