New Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 Is Thinner, Faster With 10th-Gen Intel Core CPUs

Dell reveals at Computex 2019 its next-generation XPS 13 2-in-1, which more than doubles the performance in a thinner form factor and provides up to 16 hours of battery life, thanks in part to Intel's new 10th-generation Core processors.

The Round Rock, Texas-based company revealed the new laptop-tablet hybrid as "the future of the 2-in-1" at the Computex conference in Taiwan on Tuesday. The new XPS 13 2-in-1 doesn't have a release date yet, but the company said it's "coming soon" with a starting price point of $999.

The new 2-in-1 line features Intel's new 10th-generation Core mobile processor family, the first processors based on the chipmaker's long-anticipated 10-nanometer process technology. The CPUs include new features like Intel's Deep Learning Boost, a new set of silicon-level instructions that accelerate the performance of artificial intelligence applications, and Intel's Gen11 integrated graphics, which enable 1080p gaming, 4K video playback and accelerated content creation.

The XPS 13 will be available with all three of Intel's new 10th-generation Core processors: the Core i3-1005 G1 (with up to 3.4 GHz clock frequency), the Core i5-1035 G1 (with four cores and up to 3.7 GHz) and the Core i7 1065 G7 (with four cores and up to 3.9 GHz). Memory options range from 4-32 GB in a LPDDR4x SDRAM format at 3733 MHz. Storage ranges from 256 GB to 1 TB in a PCIe 3 SSD format.

The 2-in-1 sports a 13-inch HDR400 certified display, which Dell said continues to make the device the smallest 2-in-1 available on the market. The InfinityEdge screen, which comes with Dell's EyeSafe display technology for reducing blue light, has been refined from the previous generation, giving it a 7 percent larger 16:10 screen. At the top of the display is Dell's smallest laptop camera yet, measuring at 2.25 millimeters.

The device measures 7 millimeters high when open and 13 millimeters when closed, making it 8 percent thinner than the previous XPS 13, a feat that is enabled by the new 10th-generation Intel Core processors and an advanced thermal design that includes new venting, dual fans and vapor air chamber.

The XPS 13's backlit MagLev keyboard stretches across the entire 11.69 inches of the device's width. The touchpad, in the meantime, is 19 percent larger than the previous generation. The 2-in-1's depth is 8.15 inches, and it's starting weight is 2.9 pounds.

The 2-in-1 includes two Thunderbolt 3 ports, which can be used for both display and power delivery, one microSD card reader and one 3.5-millimeter headphone/microphone combo jack. Wireless connectivity is powered by the Killer AX1650 chip, which includes Intel's Wi-Fi 6 module and Bluetooth 5.0.

Built with CNC machined aluminum with a platinum silver finish, the 2-in-1 comes with options for a black carbon fiber or arctic white woven palm rest. The device supports the Dell Premium Active Pen stylus.
