Intel is bringing 5G connectivity to laptops and a new Tiger Lake CPU capable of delivering speeds of up to 5GHz to ultra-thin notebooks later this year, which it called an industry-first.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company made the announcements at Computex 2021 on Sunday, saying that its new 5G modem, called Intel 5G Solution 5000, will be available in laptops from Acer, ASUS and HP later this year and in more than 30 laptop designs by 2022. It was developed with MediaTek and Fibocom as part of a previously announced collaboration.

The Intel 5G Solution 5000 is an M.2 module that has been certified for coverage across the world, including from carriers AT&T and Spring. Intel said it can deliver download speeds of up to 4.7 Gbps and upload speeds of up to 1.25 Gbps. This translates into a nearly five-fold increase in speed over Intel’s Gigabit LTE technology, the company added.

The chipmaker also revealed two additions to the company’s 11th-generation Core U-Series mobile processors, which are collectively known under the code name Tiger Lake. The first is a new flagship CPU, the Intel Core i7-1195G7, which the company said can deliver up to 5GHz on a single core in turbo mode and outpaces AMD’s top Ryzen 7 5800U across multiple games and content creation applications.

For instance, Intel said the new Core i7-1195G7 can provide 46-178 percent faster performance across games ranging from Fortnite to Valheim compared to AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800U. In addition, the company said the new Core i7 is 93 percent faster for video editing, 82 percent faster for DaVinci Resolve, 156 percent faster for Cyberlink Power Director, 136 percent faster for Adobe Lightroom Photo Merge and 98 percent faster for Adobe Premiere Pro Scene Detect. For the HandBrake open-source video transcoder, Intel said the Core i8 can deliver as much as eight times faster performance.

The new processors, which also includes the new mid-range Intel Core i5-1155G7, will be available in laptops from Acer, ASUS, Lenovo and MSI this summer and will go in more than 60 laptop designs by the holiday season. Intel said this will bring the total number of laptop designs with Tiger Lake CPUs to nearly 250 by the end of the year.

The Core i7-1195G7 comes with four cores, eight threads, a 2.9GHz base frequency, a 5GHz single-core turbo frequency, a 4.6GHz all-core turbo frequency, a 12 MB cache, 96 graphics execution units and a 1.4GHz graphics frequency. The Core i5-1155G7 comes with four cores, eight threads, a 2.5GHz base frequency, a 4.5GHz single-core turbo frequency, a 4.3GHz all-core turbo frequency, an 8 MB cache, 80 graphics execution units and a 1.35GHz graphics frequency

“We’ve taken the world’s best processor for thin-and-light Windows laptops and made the experience even better with the addition of our two new 11th Gen Intel Core processors with Intel Iris Xe graphics,” said Chris Walker, corporate vice president and general manager of mobility client platforms at Intel, in a statement.
