WATCH: CRN Gets Reaction To VMware’s Cloud Play At VMworld 2019

VMware isn’t the same company we first met in 1998. The company that was once focused on virtual machines has become laser-focused on the cloud.

“VMware is moving from what was a very traditional leadership and supplier and vendor in the IT community to really aggressively embracing cloud,” said Equinix CEO Charles Meyers.

It was a transformation on full display at VMworld 2019, where CEO Pat Gelsinger and his team unveiled a host of innovations that make it easier to build, run and manage applications across any environment.

“It’s about providing customers the ability to deploy applications where they want, where the business sees the need, and providing a common framework for operations and infrastructure around it,” said Milin Desai, general manager of cloud services at VMware.

Here’s a look at the top cloud-related news from VMworld 2019:

VMware Hybrid Cloud Platform

VMware took the wraps off the new VMware Hybrid Cloud Platform at VMworld 2019, allowing enterprises to migrate and modernize applications across data centers, clouds and edge locations. Powered by VMware Cloud Foundation, the new platform includes vRealize automation and operations solutions, the VMware Cloud Marketplace, and a slew of services including Horizon DaaS, AppDefense, Site Recovery, Wavefront by VMware, and a new CloudHealth Hybrid offering.

VMware Cloud on Dell EMC

VMware Cloud on Dell EMC provides scalable infrastructure delivered as a service to customers’ on-premises data center and edge locations. It combines VMware’s compute, storage and networking software with Dell EMC VxRail hyper-converged infrastructure. The platform is core to the Dell Technologies Cloud Data-Center-as-a-Service offering that was unveiled at Dell Technologies World 2019.

VMware Cloud on AWS

VMware celebrated its two-year anniversary since the unveiling of its VMware Cloud on AWS offering. New VMware HCX capabilities enable push-button migration and interconnectivity between VMware Cloud on AWS software-defined data centers running in different AWS regions, and new Elastic vSAN support further improves storage scaling. Once applications are migrated, customers can extend the capabilities of applications through integration of native AWS Services. Plus, Nvidia and VMware unveiled their plan to deliver accelerated GPU services for VMware Cloud on AWS to power modern enterprise applications, including AI, machine learning and data analytics workflows.

VMware Tanzu

This new portfolio of products and services is designed to transform the way enterprises build software on Kubernetes. The first offering in the VMware Tanzu portfolio will be VMware Tanzu Mission Control. A tech preview, Tanzu Mission Control will enable customers to manage their Kubernetes footprint across environments with complete consistency
