Slice of the Channel: AWS Hits Back At Oracle’s Larry Ellison; Samsung Shows Off Foldable Phone; Cisco And Amazon Team Up

Samsung dimmed the lightsand showed off a prototype of its first foldable smartphone display at its developer conference this week. Dubbed the Infinity Flex Display, the phone opens to a tablet-size screen and can be folded up to fit a user’s pocket. Samsung said the display will be mass-produced in the coming months and also said it’s working on technology for rollable and stretchable displays.

Cisco is teaming up with Amazon Web Services on a hybrid solution for Kubernetes. The platform lets developers build apps in the cloud or in the data center and then move between the two. It makes Cisco the first Kubernetes software platform provider to introduce portability across on-premises infrastructure deployments and Amazon EKS, Amazon’s managed Kubernetes service. It comes as the hybrid IT market becomes increasingly competitive. Just last week, IBM unveiled plans to acquire the open-source software provider Red Hat and this week we’re learning that VMware plans to acquire Kubernetes startup Heptio. Heptio provides professional services for enterprises that are adopting or already using Kubernetes. Craig McLuckie, co-founder and CEO of Heptio, said VMware’s interest is a recognition of the innovation happening in open source. Terms of the deal were not disclosed

General Electric has sold most of its stake in Pivotal Software, the Platform-as-a-Service developer that helped the conglomerate build its industrial Internet of Things platform. It comes as the company reports profits on Oct. 30 that were sharply below Wall Street forecasts.

Amazon hits back at Oracle. AWS CEO Andy Jassy tweeted on Friday that Amazon’s consumer business on Nov. 1 turned off its Oracle Data Warehouse. It comes after Oracle CTO Larry Ellison boasted about Amazon’s dependence on Oracle technology at its OpenWorld conference.
